ABB Commissions Digital Platform Integration for Improving Sunflag Steel’s Metals Plant Decision Making

Bengaluru, India – ABB India Ltd has successfully integrated its ABB Ability™ Data Analytics Platform for metals with Sunflag Iron and Steel Company Ltd, tying together all manufacturing and operational data of steel melt shops and rolling mills to improve production planning and plant performance optimization.

The plant, which can produce 5,00,000 metric tons of high-quality special steel per year, now has a platform for integrating data sources from 17 operational areas, including non-ABB systems. One notable example is the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) to benefit Sunflag’s steel melt shop (SMS) and rolling mills. The company integrated with existing automation systems for real-time process and quality monitoring, aligning with user-friendly operator dashboards accessible via a mobile web page. The platform allows for the identification and diagnosis of issues, as well as the use of additional resources.

It is one of the first global implementations of the company’s integrated plant monitoring system in the metals industry, and it is part of a long-term vision across process industries for a future in which the physical and digital worlds are connected, scalable, and harness the potential of machine learning. The project was part of the customer’s wider digital transformation engagement, with ABB providing domain expertise for systems that improve overall process visibility to enable data-driven business decision making.
