Zimmer Group and Schmalz’s New End-of-Arm Ecosystem

Zimmer Group and J Schmalz GmbH’s collaborative project, ‘MATCH’ is a multi-functional end-of-arm platform equipped with a wide range of functions and universal communication interfaces, that is compatible with all common lightweight robots and conventional robots on the market. The MATCH platform combines the best of both gripping worlds, with Zimmer Group focusing on mechanical grippers and Schmalz on vacuum-based technologies.

They have their own ecosystem that users can use to access a plethora of digital services. In addition to the SCM communication module (master gateway), the user has two other tools at their disposal: the simple guideZ setup software for further gripper configuration and the Schmalz Connect Suite for cloud diagnostics of IO-Link devices.

MATCH is simple to install, and the system can be mounted to the robot flange and easily set up with only a few manual adjustments. Because of the assistance provided by joint digital services, configuration is easy and intuitive. The compact quick-change module allows two quick and easy ways to switch a component. In addition to an automated exchange in a storage station known as the gripper station, exchanging by hand within seconds is also possible. It is possible to perform a manual change with just one hand thanks to the ergonomic click system, which is integrated on the end effector being changed. Simultaneously, this prevents the exchange module from falling.

A pneumatic/vacuum connection, as well as electrical interfaces, are provided in addition to a compatible mechanical interface. With so many technological options, it is possible to use many different robot types with a wide variety of end effectors. It ensures complete support and process control – from commissioning to ongoing operation and process monitoring.

Achim Gauß, Managing Director, Zimmer Group, said, “This collaboration created something unique: a modular system that the customer can use to meet various requirements and handle diverse applications in robotics.” To this added Dr Kurt Schmalz, Managing Partner, J Schmalz GmbH, “Furthermore, in addition to their accumulated solution knowledge, both companies offer a global sales network for support and service.”
