International Presence: JMTBA

Growing Stronger Together

Kazuo Yuhara, President, Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA), is highly optimistic about the Indian Manufacturing industry's potential to become a global hub, driven by the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. According to him, IMTEX 2025 & Tooltech 2025 is a pivotal platform to showcase advanced machinery and equipment, fostering growth and unveiling latent demand in the Indian market.

“India is on its way to becoming a manufacturing powerhouse for the world. At IMTEX 2025, a diverse range of high-precision and high-productivity tools is being displayed, which will contribute significantly to the sector's development,” said Yuhara.

The event is an ideal showcase for cutting-edge technologies and facilitates connections with professional buyers in the Indian market. “Through their expertise and networks, we aim to gain momentum in establishing a stronger presence in India,” Yuhara added.

Emerging Industry Trends

JMTBA underscores the industry’s shift towards labor-saving solutions and automation. “Machine tool manufacturers are actively working on labor-saving and automation technologies, such as the use of robots to change workpieces, measuring the shape of workpieces after machining, and the automatic transportation of workpieces and tools using AGVs (automated guided vehicles) and AMRs (autonomous mobile robots)," Yuhara noted.

He further highlighted the push for sustainable practices, “Efforts towards decarbonization and energy-saving technologies such as reducing peripheral equipment idling, monitoring the amount of cutting chips generated, and optimizing coolant usage, are being made with a view to achieve carbon neutrality.”

For a Smart Future

Emphasizing the transformative impact of smart manufacturing, he noted, “Japan faces challenges like a declining birthrate and an aging population, which has led to labor shortage. To address these issues and improve productivity and efficiency, digitalization, automation, and the introduction of robots, are essential.”

“The integration of Japan’s precision machine tools with advanced digital technologies will not only drive higher productivity but also promote energy and resource efficiency,” he added.

Japan’s Presence at IMTEX 2025

At IMTEX 2025, for the first time, JMTBA will also be hosting the Japan Pavilion in Hall 1B, bringing together exhibitors from 15 Japanese companies. Yuhara expressed confidence in the technologies being showcased, “These companies will present products tailored to the Indian market, and we encourage visitors to explore the pavilion.”

Trade Momentum Between Japan and India

Trade statistics reflect a robust relationship between the two nations. Orders for machine tools to India in 2022 were up by 6.4 percent year-on-year to 40,431 million yen. In 2023, machine tool orders from India reached an all-time high of over 51,000 million yen, with strong demand for automotive, semiconductor, and EMS-related products. “This trend is expected to continue, driven by post-China investments and the growing EMS market,” Yuhara shared.

The absence of tariffs between Japan and India further strengthens trade prospects. “We foresee an even brighter future for this partnership,” he concluded.

“India is on its way to becoming a manufacturing powerhouse for the world. At IMTEX 2025, a diverse range of high-precision and high-productivity tools is being displayed, which will contribute significantly to the sector's development.”
