To address the need for increased flexibility in machine tools like transfer and special machines, OMG turret heads are capable of performing drilling, tapping, milling, and boring operations. They can be fitted directly on the machine spindle and the units or slides with one or more moving axes, or again, they can have their own motorization. They are available in three sizes: 160, 250, and 360, each equipped with spindles with different tool couplings (ABS, DIN 55058, HSK, ER, or special). Multi-spindle heads or multipliers can also be fitted. Each turret can feature up to 8 positions, which means it can perform 8 different operations without having to reposition the piece or, in the case of transfer units, in the same workstation. This is a big advantage in terms of flexibility and cutting running costs.
The peculiarity of the OMG turret is machining spindle positioning, using a HIRTH crown gear. There are no moving parts subject to wear and the system is therefore sturdy and precise and provides constant reproducibility over time. The securing/release of the HIRTH crown gear is by means of a hydraulic circuit, while a single motor selects the workstation and starts tool rotation.
