Sandvik Coromant Graduates 207 Students from Pune’s Centre of Manufacturing Excellence

Pune, India – Sandvik Coromant has graduated a sixth cohort of students from its School of Manufacturing Excellence. A total of 207 students completed the 2023-2024 course and attended the convocation ceremony for official certification, which took place, at the school in Pune. The School of Manufacturing Excellence was founded in partnership between Sandvik Coromant India and the Government of Maharashtra in 2018. Based at the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Pune, the School was created to provide further education and upskill the younger generation.

During the annual program, the school educates students on manufacturing technology, metrology, technical drawing, workshop calculations, CNC machining, and programming, which enables them to develop their skills and their employability in the manufacturing sector. Since its founding, the School has helped 1,344 students graduate with a certification, with 847 achieving placements at manufacturing companies across India. To become eligible for certification, students must study at the school for six hours a week and undergo structured theory and practical training. The practical assessment involves producing a component based on a given technical drawing and demonstrating they can operate CNC machines independently.

Present from Sandvik Coromant at this year’s certification ceremony were Kiran Acharya, Managing Director and CFO Sandvik Coromant India; Obhijeet Chakraborty, Head - Facilities Management, Sustainability, and MUFA; Rahul Jejurikar, Cluster Channel Manager; Vignesh Iyer, Head - Financial Reporting and CSR; and Roshni Acharya, CSR Specialist. Ramakant Bhavsar, Directorate, Vocational Education and Training, ITI, Pune; Anjan Deb Ghosh, Director, Pramith Foundation; and Yogesh Baviskar, Vice President - Sales, SkillSonic India, were also in attendance.

“The School of Manufacturing Excellence was created to give equal opportunities to all young people in India,” said Acharya. “The skills gap in India needs bridging, and the Center plays a vital role in facilitating further education, particularly for those who face barriers to accessing higher education. Since the School’s founding, 1,509 students have enrolled, with 1,344 graduating. It’s great to see a clear interest from young people in the manufacturing sector, and Sandvik Coromant is thrilled to be a part of this.”
