Complete shaft machining in one setup
The company’s Shaft Chuck is used for chucking ends and the outside of a workpiece and is used primarily for long shafts. It shortens the number of machining operations from two to one, thus improving productivity.
How it works
First step: The chuck body is initially in the retracted position. The shaft is held between the centers on the chuck center and tail spindle center and driven with the face driver. This allows tooling to machine the outside clamping diameter at the end of the shaft closest to the chuck. This is the preparation for OD clamping with jaws.
Second step: The chuck advances forward and the jaws clamp and grip the workpiece securely on the previously machined surface at the shaft end. This allows for heavy chip removal or rough machining, reducing takt time.
Third step: The jaws in this final step are de-clamped and the chuck is retracted and once more clamped between the centers and driven by the face driver. This allows full part access so that all outside diameters can be machined with a finishing process to obtain perfect concentricity.
Key features of shaft chucks
Tru-Power shaft chucks are normally supplied with a face driver with a fixed center and a double action cylinder. However, chucks can be provided with a single action cylinder and a spring-loaded center with a face driver if required.
Balancing provision available: If balancing is required, then a balance ring arrangement can be provided on the adaptor.
Driving force: Driving pins are actuated with the double piston cylinder and penetrated into the face of the workpiece to engage an effective driving force on the workpiece. The double action cylinder also enables the chuck jaws to grip to further secure the chucking and allows for higher chip removal rates.
Highest accuracy: A fixed center arrangement guarantees the highest possible concentricity.
Axial reference: The center bore of the workpiece is where the axial reference is obtained to enable the accuracy of the chuck to be fully realized then this reference position must be within tolerance.
Typical workpieces: They include shafts, crankshafts, camshafts, and railway axles.
Problem-free installation: This chuck will require an adaptor to be installed on one’s machine. One must simply specify which ASA or JIS Spindle nose their machine has and the company will provide the correct adaptor to suit.
Please note that the Shaft Chucks are currently available in a diameter of 220 mm only.
