Hyderabad, India – Safran SA, the French aerospace giant, is all set to open one of its largest aircraft engines MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) facilities in Hyderabad, India. The facility will encompass 23.5 acres and have a built-up area of 36,500 sq ft. It will be located in the GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park SEZ, and is expected to be able to service 300 engines per year by 2035. Construction is set to begin in September (2023), with the MRO facility to be completed in December 2024 and operations to begin in 2025, providing roughly 1,000 employment at peak capacity.
GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ Ltd (GHASL), a subsidiary of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), has signed a land lease agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines Services India Pvt Ltd (SAESIPL), for the construction and operation of engine maintenance and repair facilities for Safran’s LEAP turbofan engines.
According to Aman Kapoor, CEO, GMR Airport Land Development, Safran chose the GMR Aerospace & Industrial Park following a thorough global evaluation. The facility will initially be able to service 100 engines per year, with ambitions to increase to about 300 engines per year by 2035.
As per Nicolas Potier, Vice President, Safran Aircraft Engines, the MRO project represents a substantial investment in Safran’s future in India and will offer critical capacity to support the operations of its airline clients. Furthermore, Safran already has two industrial facilities in the GMR Aerospace & Industrial site’s SEZ region for cable harnessing and aircraft engine component production, with a Safran-GE joint venture, CFM, operating an engine maintenance training center at the site.
