Sandvik Coromant Presents CoroMill® MF80 for Automotive Milling

Sandvik Coromant CoroMill® MF80 in action

Sandviken, Sweden – Sandvik Coromant, a global metal cutting leader, is expanding its milling range with the new CoroMill® MF80 for automotive milling applications in ISO K and ISO P materials in near-to-90-degree operations with fixture constraints. This innovative milling concept, based on a technology platform similar to the existing CoroMill®345, offers a 40 percent lighter cutter body with shim protection and a large number of inserts for secure and reliable machining, even in vibration-prone overhang applications.  The 89.5-degree approach angle enables the multi-edge cutter to work close to the fixture, which not only dramatically enhances machine utilization, but also provides longer tool life with less scrap.

The inserts contain eight cutting edges, chip protection, optimized micro geometry, and a wiper edge for optimum surface finish. The cutting edge is slanted for smooth cutting action and low cutting forces, making it excellent for thin-walled components and unstable machine setups. In a roughing shoulder milling performance test with a competitor brand, CoroMill® MF80 demonstrated a stunning 67 percent increase in tool life, which resulted in a 60 percent increase in overall productivity. After 40 minutes of machining, Sandvik Coromant had 15 freshly machined components, while the rival had nine. The shim protection and high number of insert edges substantially cut the cost per part in this roughing application.
