Jajpur, India – Jindal Stainless Ltd, (JSL), India’s largest stainless-steel manufacturer, and the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), have inked an MoU to collaborate on several projects involving research and development. With this partnership, JSL and IIT (ISM) intend to conduct research, innovative product development, environmental safety, and skill development. Awanindra Kumar Singh, Vice President, SMS, JSL, and Rajiv Shekhar, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, signed the MoU.
This MoU is in line with the company’s efforts to promote industry-institute partnerships and to develop collaborative pathways for mutual benefit between scholars and industry technocrats. Both partners will explore research and development opportunities in a wide range of technological frontiers, such as assessing the physiochemical properties and combustion characteristics of coal samples, ESG measures, pelletization projects, water balancing, soil and geosynthetic studies, and so on. The company has a coal-fired power station and sources coal from throughout the world. Better knowledge in coal selection on the proper criteria, coal storage and handling, pulverizing, and efficient combustion of mixed coal as a recipe has a lot of value creation, which the MoU will assist in promoting. They will also jointly work to discover efficient solutions to JSL’s many technological and operational difficulties.
As part of the MoU, the company will support the institution by providing students with paid summer internships, aligning projects for M-Tech students with JSL-specific requirements, and hiring envirotech and electrical/metallurgical grads on merit. Furthermore, IIT (ISM) will introduce Executive Development Programs into its curriculum, which will be supported by the company. In the past, the company has signed MoUs with eminent institutions of the country, such as IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT BHU, OP Jindal University, Raigarh, UPES Dehradun, MNIT, Jaipur, and others.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director, JSL, said, “As India’s largest manufacturer of sustainable metals, we take pride in endorsing green initiatives in production. IIT (ISM) is a premier institute with major strength in minerals and related efficiencies, and hence a natural partner for collaboration. We will take up projects that will harness our industrial excellence and the institute’s technical prowess.”
Against this backdrop, Rajiv Shekhar, Director, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, commented, “This MoU with JSL adds another milestone to our academic and industry collaboration. JSL is an industry leader, and we are suitably poised to offer technical and operational solutions. This partnership will equip JSL with a rich understanding of optimizing efficiencies and will be an opportunity for our students to develop necessary skills and amass hands-on experience.”
